Is it normal for a baby to have a BM so infrequently?

My son is 5 1/2 months old and started solids about 4 weeks ago. He is eating vegetables and oatmeal at this time and is still nursing mostly. Is it normal to not have a bowel movement every day or at least every other day?

  • He could be a little constipated from starting the baby foods. I would get some fruit ones and also prune baby food to get his BMs back to normal.

  • my son had them about once a week until he started eating solids. he was exclusively breastfed. A few times it was 9 or 10 days. It happened alot more once he started solids. the doc said as long as what comes out is soft, it's not constipation. if you think he is constipated, give fruit once a day and a few ounces water or watered down juice. he's now 13 months and sometimes goes 4 or 5 times a day!!

  • As long as he is not straining or have hard bowel movements, he is fine.
