  • There are many examples of this throughout history. Kings having affairs with ladies in waiting, which would cause their elevation in court. It was not uncommon for male painters throughout history to have a wealthy female patron that might also be a lover. There was also Placage in the 1800s. White French and Spanish men entered into common law marriages with black, native, and creole descent. .  In the 1840's and beyond, quadroons where common place. These women would live in luxury apartments as mistresses of affluent white men.

  • well geishas have beneficiaries that get special treatment. Not sure now but that was hte case in the past so yes I guess that could be equated to a kept woman. Also kings had coutestians (sp that wrong) and yes they were kept around for speical favors.
