getting a new roof with insurance money?

We live in a high wind area that gets lots of hail, ice and snow. Our roof is constantly losing shingles and needs to be replaced. Our insurance company said we don't have the full replacement value insurance that we have the depreciated value insurance. They said we should get some estimates and they will have an adjustor come out and look at our roof. The thing is we are trying to decide if we should get the estimate and take the check from the insurance company and do it ourselves so we won't be out of a lot of money due to the roof being depreciated. We don't know how the whole insurance process really even works. Has anyone ever gotten insurance money and done the roof themselves?

  • I'd get the estimate send it in and then do the work yourself if y'all can do it. That is what we have always done.

  • We had an ice dam build on our roof this winter and it made our bathroom ceiling collapse. We got the check from the insurance company and fixed the roof and bathroom ourselves. The extra we were able to use to completely gut and remodel the bathroom. Best bad roof ever!
