How much does a family of 3 spend on food monthly?

Just wondering what everyone else with the same family size spends monthly on food?

  • We have a maximum budget of $150 a month for food and other "grocery store" items. In order to have more for food, I don't use cleaners any more (vinegar and baking soda do the trick), we don't use paper towels or napkins (cloth instead), and we eat a lot of rice, beans, and pasta. I bake my own bread, and we make a loaf last a week. I use powdered milk instead of buying by the gallon. Thankfully, DS (three years old) just finished potty training, so diapers are out of the budget, but we found out our income is being cut another $150 a month, too, while our rent and utilities are being raised. We haven't eat out or bought any dessert items or prepackaged food in over a year.

  • My husband and I and our 1 year old spend $60-$70 per week. If I do a good job rotating grocery stores and stocking up on sale items I can cut it down to $40-$50 some weeks. I would say it averages $250 per month.
