What could cause a positive pregnancy test when your not pregnant?

About a year ago my cousin took a pregnancy test and it was pos. VERY faint but def. there. But she eventually started her period and the pregnancy never progressed. What could have happened? She didn't go to the dr either.
Just curious what could cause this?

  • She could have miscarried too though. LOTS of woman had miscarriages & did not even know it. They just thought their period started.

You can get a false positive if you JUST got off birth control, because your body has a high percentage of the pregnant hormone when you are on birth control pills.

  • Yeah it sounds to me like she may have had a very early miscarriage ( if they are early, they are sometimes mistaken for a period. ) It is almost unheard of for a woman to test positive and not be pregnant at all.
