How do you get a 5 yr old to get his underwear on?

I have no clue why he takes them off & not wear them. He even does this at school. I have asked him why he does it & his answer is I don't know. I have let him pick out his underwear at the store. I just don't know what to do anymore.

  • is it just the underwear or do other types of clothing bother him? Is he bothered by tags or things lying snug on him? (I'm thinking of the waist band.)

I'm sorry, I don't have a suggestion beyond removing tags if there are any and stressing that this isn't one of those things we get a choice on - when we're out in certain settings we have to dress appropriately. Maybe give him a time when it's ok to remove his underwear - like you have to keep them on at school but as soon as you get home, knock your socks off. ;) Did you try a reward chart? He gets a sticker every day he keeps them on at school and after so many stickers he can pick - whatever - favorite dinner, special activity, etc.

my2.5boys, I don't see it as an issue that a school requires underwear. I live in a beach community. All our stores have "No shirt, no shoes, no service" signs. Sometimes life hands you dress codes - abiding them doesn't hurt.

  • OP here: It is required by school that all children wear underwear. I don't care if he does not have any on at home, but at school he has to wear them.

  • Maybe he doesn't like the particular style that you've bought him. There a a few to chose from. There are the standard briefs and there are boxers and then there are boxer briefs that cover as much as a boxer but cling a little like a brief. Maybe you should try a different style with him? My guys wear different styles... to each his own, right?

  • OP HERE: He has every single style there is. So I know it is not that.

  • My boys hate wearing underwear, so I usually don't make them. My son doesn't like the waistbands. He has a hard time pulling them up on his own without them getting all twisted, and they leave marks on his waist from being bunched up all day. Perhaps your son is having a similar problem? What's so wrong with him wearing no underwear?

  • Sorry, I didn't read that the school requires it. Just one more reason I love home-schooling!

  • Idmrmom: I understand dress codes, and am generally perfectly happy abiding by them. But really, how can a school enforce something like that. Do the teachers go and peer down the pants of all their students? I understand, shorts/skirts being certain lengths, they are easily viewable. But requiring underwear is a bit ridiculous. Besides, shirts and shoes are not the same as underwear. Can you honestly tell which of the people you meet, are or aren't wearing any? Does it truly make a difference? (Unless it's a woman wearing a skirt, than yes, underwear might be an issue.)
