Should I ask my neighbors to pay half?

We need to clear some overgrown berry bushes and they are serving as the divider between my home and the neighbors. There are 2 neighboring homes. I would also like to put in some kind of fence for privacy. Is it appropriate to ask the neighbors input as it will affect thier homes as well?

  • You shouldn't ask for half. If you want the fence, you pay for it. Make sure you check with the town hall regarding the proper permits and the actual property line too. Asking them to pay half opens an entire can of worms you don't want. Like who would be repsonsible for maintenance if a panel comes loose? What if the neighbors decided they wanted to paint it a color you hate? What if they decide 3 years from now that they no longer want a fence? It's just a bad idea all around.

  • You can always ask. But that does not mean they will help with the bill. Just make sure what you do is only on your property. Especially if they do not want to help pay.

  • Depends on who's property the bushes and fence are on. If you want the neighbors to be part owners of the fence, and you place it right on the property line, yeah ask. But, if you want it on your land and want control over it I'd say don't ask... it might cause more trouble then it's worth.

  • just make sure it's not on their property at all and you can do what you want

  • Make sure you are not encroaching into their property and that there is not home owners association regulations that prohibit you from putting your fence up. Your neighbors are under no obligation to pitch in. If you have a cordial relationship with them, ask them casually for their input and see if they volunteer or have any objections. If they don't volunteer, ask them if they would consider going half the worst case scenario they say no. If that happens, then it is up to you.

  • I would let the neighbors know you plan to put in a fence. No way should they pay for it, but make sure they are OK with you removing the bushes, and where exactly is your property border? are those your plants or the neighbors? those are things you need to find out. If you plant to get rid of the bushes completely ask your neighbors if they like them and would like to transplant them somewhere else. Either way, asking them is a good way to be courteous and neighborly and will keep you on their good side.
