Attorneys for indicted former Rep. Rick Renzi (R-Ariz.) claim that recently released White House documents and an interview with former Bush White House Counsel Harriet Miers prove that the Justice Department illegally leaked information about him in late 2006.
But DOJ’s case has run into legal problems. Renzi’s lawyers have unsuccessfully challenged broad portions of the indictment, and a bipartisan group of top House leaders, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), have filed legal motions asserting the FBI may have violated Renzi’s constitutional privileges as a lawmaker while conducting a wiretap on his phone.
