Toddler covers ears...

My 14-month old daughter is learning sign language, and knows and uses in perfect context 6+ signs. She has recently in the past month or so has started frequently covering her ears, for a brief second. At first I thought it was her own sort of sign and that she was trying to tell us something. But she does it at all sorts of different times- not just when it's loud or when she's upset. Any ideas as to what this is all about?

Thank You.

  • She's discovering her ears possibly, and they do this covering their ears to block out sounds or muffle them & uncover, etc. It's a curiosity. They also may do it with their eyes, cover them, uncover them, etc.

  • My DS does the same, he's 17 months. Its a game to him...weve put ear muffs on him once & hes been doin it ever since then. Most of the time he laughes when he does it. Id suggest just checking with her ped next time youre in for your DD's checkup. Im sure its nothing though. =] goofy girl!
