Should the President of the United States be allowed to control the shutting down of 'non-governmental' PRIVATE User computer networks ?

The new version would allow the president to "declare a cybersecurity emergency" relating to "non-governmental" computer networks and do what's necessary to respond to the threat. Other sections of the proposal include a federal certification program for "cybersecurity professionals," and a requirement that certain computer systems and networks in the private sector be managed by people who have been awarded that license.

Might these 'cybersecurity professionals' be government officials? Do we need government involved in private industry?

  • Hell, no.
I want to hear what all these people who blasted GB for the Patriot act say about Obama being able to take over their internet whenever he sees fit.
Not going to hold my breath though.

  • Good point about the Patriot act. It is hilarious how the dems blast that (I didn't like it either), but pass far worse stuff that has the potential to invade even more of our privacy and rights!

  • Makes me wonder.. if the President has control to shut down out internet, do you think he has the access to see everyone's information too?

  • By virtue of having a social security number, the CIA has the ability/authority to see/learn whatever they want about a person.

  • I don't think it is right, anymore than the government taking over the newspapers, TV, or radio.

  • I wonder how many people realize what that really means. At the drop of a hat, the government could take over CM, facebook, your employer's internal network, the computer system inside private schools. Anything they deemed "relevant to the threat or emergency"

do you think he has the access to see everyone's information too?
Via packet sniffing they already do. They can use clouds to hone in on common words and search for warning words. Thing is there is so much data crossing the net every second of every day it's a long involved process.

  • Wonder what the gov wolld now consider a cyber emergency? Can't trust this adm. The cyber security act in place now is sufficient. They just want to control the info out there. As we saw with the spam mail they sent out.
