Mary Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney and onetime gay outreach director for Coors Brewing Company, gave $1,000 to a Republican Senate hopeful who voted against same-sex marriage and allowing gay couples to adopt children in the District of Columbia.

Cheney, 40, has a two-year old son with her partner of 17 years, Heather Poe. The donation to former Rep. Rob Portman (R-OH) was made in May. Portman is seeking the Senate seat that will be vacated by Sen. George Voinovich (R-OH) when he retires in 2011.

Cheney’s donation is remarkable considering her public comments on same-sex marriage and gay adoption. In 2004, she reportedly considered quitting her father’s re-election campaign after President Bush endorsed a federal marriage banning gay marriage. In 2007, she rebuked televangelist James Dobson for comments criticizing gay couples’ adoption.

  • Who are we to say how she spends her money? Who are we to question who she gives it to? And this is all coming from a Liberal.

  • I won't even try to figure out what motivates her to donate to a politician for any reason. I am sure she has a reason and that's good enough for me. Who are you to judge? Just because she is gay does that mean that she has to represent what some gay people want?

  • Maybe she isn't a one-issue kind of person. Seems weird, though.

  • Its weird because its an issue that is central to her and she has fought about the gay adoption and gay marriage laws...hmm, not sure whatto make of that??

  • She probably has other reasons that are more important for doing what she did. Some people support what they agree with most overall as opposed to just the one issue.

  • I have to agree with a couple other posters. There could be another reason she donated the money.. perhaps for another political stance they agree on.

  • Perhaps other issues such as the future of our country are more improtant to her right now.

  • Probably the same reason so many pro-gay marriage people voted for Obama and keep voting for Dems, despite the official Dem platform saying marriage is one man and one woman.

Answer by Anonymous at 4:09 PM on Aug. 31, 2009

  • Just because she is gay doesn't mean that she can't think for herself does it? Maybe she thinks the person has enough good qualities that they out-way one difference of opinion. I like her.
