  • basically, your upper gastrointestinal tract will be cleaned out, with your doctors previous instructions. usually just stop eating some time the evening before. depending on where the procedure is done and how skillful your gastroenterologist is he may simply sedate you or he may put you out completely. you get to just lie there and wake up when it's all done. you will have a small rubber scope put down your throat with a lighted camera on the end, and it will provide an image on a screen for the Dr. to view as he is doing the screening. looking for ulcers, perforations, signs of H. pylori or erosion. some docs go only to the stomach and some go a little further. you'll need someone to drive you home.

  • i'm guessing you have a scope ( egd) scheduled, an uppper GI series done at radiology in the hospital is a completely different thing.

  • if your procedure is being done in the radiology dept. at the hospital and is called " an upper GI series" you can drive yourself home. you wont be sedated for that procedure.

  • Here are some info (links below)...there are different procedures like the PP said...
Upper GI doesn't use a scope...an Upper GI endoscopy does.
