How do trade schools work? How can someone be a nurse without getting medical training from a university?

I know of a woman who went to a trade school to learn about nursing. This school teaches her how to be a nurse but how does it cover all the other important information a university would offer?

  • RN's have a 4 year degree from a university. LVN's can be trained at a trade, community, or vocational school and the degree can be completed in under 2 years.

  • It's probably not a degree program, maybe just certification? We have a vo tech school that teaches Respiratory and Nursing and after you complete the program you are eligible to sit for boards. You put in the same amount and quantity of time you would from a university. Is that what you are referring to??

  • The licensing varies by state. In Illinois it is possible to complete and RN program at a community college.
