  • Usually children have their first communion when they are in second grade, so around 7 years old. The girls do normally wear the veil. If you can't afford a gown, talk to your Priest and see if there are any you can borrow or if there's something specific they do in that situation.

  • At our parish my older daughters wore a veil and the had their first communion in 2nd grade. We were fortunate enough to be able to use a dress my eldest daughter used as a flower girl for their communion dress. If you cannot afford one see if you can borrow one. It doesn't have to be expensive or fancy. Most girls wore a pretty white Easter dress. Some wore a white cotton dress with a little lace. There were many different kinds of dresses. Talk to the parish about what they do. Our new parish does communion on an individual basis so the parents help with preparation when the child is ready (they have to be at least 7 years old though). Each parish is different in the way they handle things.

  • The kids in our parish have their first communion in the 2nd grade and the girls aren't allowed to wear veils or gloves. Since the kids all sit together in a group in the front, they arent allowed to carry anything, like purses or rosaries, otherwise they'll start swinging things around, get distracted, etc.

You can probably get a decent dress from JC Penneys that isn't too expensive. It doesn't have to be frilly. Or ask the parish if they have one you can borrow. My son wore slacks, a button-up shirt and tie. One boy wore jeans. But many other's wore a 3 piece suit.

  • 2nd grade for my children too. The veil was optional - some wore them some didn't. We got a beautiful dress from Burlington Coat Factory for around $30 and a veil for about $10. Many friends got their dress form Penneys. You could check with the parish if you need to or maybe a friend has a dress you could borrow.
