sleeping = growing?

i was told that wen babies sleep alot it's because they are going through a growth spurt. is that true? my dd has her days when she seems to only be awake to eat, and it makes me nervous. some nights she will sleep from like 10 pm - 7 am. i am not complaining, but i just wanna make sure its normal. i was always under the impression that newborns only wake up to eat basically, but she has always been very awake and alert...now it seems like shes sleeping how i read she would, i am just not used to it.

  • lots of sleep + no fever, little crankiness + extra feeds *usually* = growth spurt
    lots of sleep + lots of crankiness + possible fever + possible less feeds *could* = sick.

    Just watch her. If she seems happy, just sleepy, don't worry about.

  • Lots of sleep can also be a result of diet. If you aren't breastfeeding and your child has formula, dairy, meat or anyhting processed then she will tend to sleep more because it is much harder to digest.

  • My 4 1/2 month old son sleeps from about 830pm to at least 9 pm (gets up twice to eat). The takes at least two 1 1/2-2 hr naps during the day. I think some babies just sleep more than others.

  • hey bree!i think that sounds pretty normal.if shes not running a fever or having watery bowels and shes not extra fussy it sounds like shes fine.our girls are going through a very big stage in their developement right now and sleeping is good for their immune system and their little growing bodies.abriauna sleeps from 630 to 630 and takes 2 1 to 2 hour naps during the day.so were lucky in that respect.i think we should just enjoy because i hear around 6 mo. their sleeping patterns normally change and you could be up every hour!!LOL
