cleft lip and palate question

is there anyway this could be detected in ultrasounds or anything before birth?

  • i don't think so. i had a friend in high school born with this and she had a few surgeries and it looks a lot better!

  • Sometimes they can see a cleft lip with a good ultrasound, but not always. As far as the palate, the nurses are the ones that check for that right after birth, because it is inside the mouth and can be either the hard or soft palate or both. The Ped also rechecks the infant in the nursery. Surgery and special nipples for feeding are doing wonders for the children born with it.
