how can you tell if a child is wheezing or just has chest congestion? I can never hear it, but the doctor always asks me that!

  • A child that is wheezing sounds like a cat purring. It is more of a rattle.

  • Wheezing will make a whistling noise when he/she breathes in. You may have to put your ear on her chest in order to hear it. Generally the wheezing will be more noticable when breathing in.

  • tyfry... the cat purring sounds more like strider and not like wheezing!

    OP... It sounds like a whistle and its usually on the inhale but is more serious if heard on the exhale. You can also put your hand on his/her back (over the lungs) and feel it when he/she breathes in or out

  • put your ear to his chest and listen to the breathing. Chest congestion is more of a rattle, wheezing is a whistling or 'huuuuuuh' sound that's not coming from his voice.
    Sometimes its really quiet and you can't hear it without a stethoscope tho
