Are Heathens and Asatruar the same?

If not, could some one please explain to me the difference, and maybe send me some links too. Thanks!

  • Not exactly. Asatru refers to a very specific organized religion. It's one of the state religions sanctioned in Iceland. Heathen refers to people who practice any of the northern european reconstructionist religions. There are also Odinists and Theodists. It's like the difference between Christian and Methodist. Heathens can be Asatru or Odinist or Theodist or one of the more obscure ones. And then some don't claim a specific branch (like non-denominational Christians). You'll see the term Heathen used interchangably with any of the branches, along with Germanic or Norse Pagan, though that's typically not the term used by most Heathens, more one that gets assigned by others. It's more common among people who moved from eclectic Pagan to Heathenry.

  • I couldn't have said it better!

    Asatru are "Heathens"
    Heathens are Pagan
BUT Not all Pagans are Heathens
    Not all Heathens are Asatru

The term Pagan could also translate in to non-denom in most cases
    So it's like this...
    Sothern Baptists are Baptist
    Baptists are Christian
But Not all Christians are Baptist
And Not all Baptists are Sothern Baptist...

    Make sence?
