I have one child and we are thinking about adopting, but don't know where to start.

We have one child and can't have any more. We were wanting to do an open adoption with my friend. We aren't really sure where to begin. Can anyone that has gone through the adoption process give us any advice?

  • I would say research, research, research!! Find which path to adoption fits your family best. Foster to adopt, domestic private, and international. Foster to adopt is basically free and the others can cost thousands of dollars.

  • You say "open adoption with your friend", so if you are adopting your friend's child, both of you need to get family lawyers and counseling PRIOR to her making a decision. Also, have a plan A for adoption and plan B if your friend decides at some point that she wants to parent her child. It can be both a blessing and a curse to be friends with the expectant mother. It could hurt your relationship. Do keep researching things, the best time to find the answers you need is BEFORE you need them. Good luck to you both!
