Weight and Lengh at 12 months??

My doctor told us to give my son ice cream for the extra calories but I think he's doing just fine! He's 30 1/2 inches and 19.7 lbs. He was 7.8 at birth. He looks healthy and is extremely happy! I think he's just a very active baby!

I'm just wondering what other babies weighed???

  • My son was 303/4 inches and 19.8 lbs, so pretty much exactly the same as your son. His pediatrician, and the local health nurse both say he is fine, that he is just built tall and slim. I think that as long as you feed him a well balanced diet, he is good. I know whole fat dairy products are very good for their brain development. I think that they grow well based upon their percentile curve is more important than what they actually measure.

  • Well being 19.7 lbs and that tall would make him really thin. My son is 31 inches and 25lbs. I really think that you might want to take your doctors suggestion and start giving your child a few extra calories a day, not necessarily ice cream but some extra fruit or bread or something every day would help. Because he could be considered underweight and that's not good for their neural development.

  • My son was 6lbs 13oz at birth. At his 12 month appointment he was 24lbs 30 1/2inches long. My son is kind of on the skinny side so if your son is only 19lbs I think you might want to take your doctors advice

  • I just looked up my son's stats from his 12 month appointment (which was actually when he was 13-14 months old), and he was 30 inches and 18.5 pounds. Yes, that is the 5th percentile for both categories, but he was in no way undernurished. He is now a very healthy 4 year old, who is still small for his age (39 inches and 32 pounds at his 4yo appointment), but he is very smart and active. Don't stress about his "neurolgical development" as long as you are feeding him healthy foods and he is healthy and thriving. And I really disagree with the doctor about giving him ice cream for calories. There are natural foods (like cheese, avocado, etc.) that are higher in calorie. Once you start them on junk food there is no going back! That's all they will want, and they won't care for the healthy foods you want them to eat. Good luck!
