  • There is no need to panic or go over board -- or spray every door handle. The swine flu is no more dangerous than the flus that go around every season -- people die every year from some strain of the flu and the people who are most likely to have severe complications from even the seasonal flue are high risks groups (children under 5, people over 65, pregnant women, and people with other preexisting medical conditions). This IS NOT NEW! This one is just getting attention.

That hand sanitizer stuff is crap. Plain soap and water -- NOT ANTIBACTERIAL. Antibacterials are useless against a VIRUS...and further more they create stronger strains of bacteria and kill off protective bacteria. If you insist using a hand spray...go simple. Mix peroxide and water, or alcohol and water -- pour in a spray bottle. Avoiding sick people goes without saying, cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze.

  • What makes this virus different is that it is affecting people in their 20's and 30's and 40's and doesn't seem to affect young children or the elderly as much as one would expect. However, even the CDC aknowledges that most people recover without incident, and those who are at high risk are those with medical conditions: asthma, diabetes, suppressed immune systems, heart disease, kidney disease, neurocognitive and neuromuscular disorders.

Pregnancy always puts a woman at higher risk of having problems from any illness because of the change in her body chemistry and risk of an uncontrolled fever affecting the fetus. Again, not new. What they DO NOT KNOW is if the swine flu will be more likely to cause problems or even if it will affect they fetus. They have no data -- so precaution --NOT PANIC -- is advised.
