how to get gum out?

One of my lovely children (and of course neither one will own up to it) dropped thier gum on the kitchen floor instead of putting it into the trash...now its linoleum...i have mopped, scrubbed, and started to take a sharp knife to the floor untill i saw scratches...i cant get it to come off! mopping and scrubbing just seem to smear it...and i dont want to scratch the floor.....is there another way to get this stuff off??? HELP!
