How old do my children have to be to start school in Indiana?

Hi, we are hoping to move to Fort Wayne in 2011 from England, UK and I was wondering what age my children start school over there. Over here it is 4-5 years. Thanks

  • MOST public elementary schools require that children be 5 years old to enter Kindergarten by the start of the school year. Cut off dates vary between the end of August and mid-October for the year you want to start, so you would need to check with your specific school district (in Fort Wayne). So if your child's birthday is around September/October, you may need to wait until the following school year--or have your child take a "placement test" to see if he/she has the prerequisite skills necessary to start sooner.

  • Yes, here in Indy, it is 5 years old by....some certain date. August 1st, maybe? You'd have to double check with your particular school though to be on the safe side.

  • Yes, 5 by August 1 to start K, but then a lot of people do 2 years of preschool. Preschool at age three and Pre-K at age four.

  • I live in the middle of Indiana and the schools here require children to be 5 before August 1st to enter Kindergarten. Kindergarten is what most people consider the "start" of their schooling, even though many families put their child in pre-school at 3 or 4.

However, the actual age that the compulsory education laws take effect in Indiana is 7. That means that you are not required by law to enroll your child in an educational program until the school year that they would turn 7.
