Nurse practitioner vs doctor

I'm 37 weeks and at my appointment this week I will be meeting with a nurse practitioner instead of a doctor because the office has been so busy. Can I expect the same from them as I would a doctor? I'm just a little concerned since I'm so far along and I know I will be having an exam to see if I have progressed any. Any experiences with this?

  • Personally in my experience Nurse Practioners are as good if not better than doctors. I find that because they are nurses not doctors they are allowed to allocate more time per appointment than doctors (they cost less per minute). Also nurse practioners recieve a more narrow and focused education so they tend to provide more specialized care (which is perfect for Prenatal care). Finally all nurse practioners are supervised by physicians, so the care you recieve will be reviewed and if the physician thinks anything has been missed, you will be contacted.

  • It would be pretty similar.
But you can decline the exam~ it will not tell anyone any information they can use.

  • I loved my NP. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to do prenatal care.
