How to make more breast milk? How do you get more of a supply?

I am a new mother of a 16 day old baby girl, and I was wondering how to make more, My baby eats soo much through out the entire day that it seems kind of hard pumping? When is the best time to pump before or after eatings? After easting I don't ever get much milk out of My pump.

  • It's not unusual to have a hard time pumping at this point. My girl is 5 months and it's still hard to pump. Pumping output is not a good indicator of milk supply.
However, make sure and drink LOTS of water. Remember to eat (the first couple weeks after DD was born I forgot to eat and drink enough!). Can take Fenugreek and/or Blessed Thistle. Both herbal supplements that you can get at The Vitamin Shoppe. About $5-10 for a bottle of capsules. Also, eating oatmeal and having a small amount (like 4 oz) of dark beer (like Guinness) will help, possibly.

  • Just nurse. At this point, don't worry about the pump. It's merely added work. Two weeks before going back to work, start pumping WHILE nursing. Doesn't short the baby at all.
