Why fix something that everyone keeps telling me isn't there?

"Senate Finance Committee moved Friday to quell the latest furor over President Obama's healthcare overhaul, discussing added identification and enforcement requirements intended to prevent illegal immigrants from receiving federal benefits."

If it had always been not to allow illegals access, why are they trying to revise it?

"Committee members ended their closed-door deliberations without reaching agreement on a response, but they are scheduled to work into the weekend."

If they do not intend on allow illegals access, why can't they make an agreement?

  • Technically, there is nothing in the bill that says illegals will be covered. HOWEVER, there are also NO provisions that one must PROVE citizenship in order to get coverage. It's one of the many vague parts of the bill which have those people against the bill up in arms. On at least two separate occasions that I know of, the GOP has tried to get an amendment in the bill to clarify this issue, but the Dems wouldn't allow it. When someone says the bill does not provide coverage for illegals, they aren't lying, but they aren't telling the full truth either. There's nothing preventing illegals from receiving coverage. And yes, hospitals will still provide care for anyone uncovered, including illegals.

  • I am having a hard time understanding this one. I assume hospitals will still be required to treat illegals - they won't just refuse any treatment and let them die outside the hospital, right? So the government will STILL be providing some healthcare for them. The only way to stop providing it is to crack down on illegals entering the country! I don't see how anything else will work.

  • OP what do you know about illegal immigrants? Do you know everybody's personal story?Do you know why their status is not legal?
Did you ever think about those who were victims of illegal child labor. American citizen bringing people from other countries to work for them us slaves. They take away their passports ,don't extend the visas, they don't GIVE them any kind of medical care...I can go one&one.
You seems to not know much about immigrants! Only assuming something and blaming 10% of the population of something what is not the real reason why our health care system is so messed up.

  • Exactly Micheledo - Hospitals are not allowed to have a person prove citizenship before they are treated - but there's gotta be checks and balances in place. Okay - so someone who is here Illegally won't be able to sign up for the government program (if there is one) - but they can waltz into any publicly funded hospital and get the treatment they seek. And that puts medical entities in a very precarious position - they can't turn away a person that's been in a bad car wreck - they won't be reimbursed for the treatment they give - so what do they do? Foot the bill themselves or turn them away and face Human Rights lawsuits when someone dies. And anyone who thinks that neither of those situations puts our tax dollars right in the middle of the thicket - doesn't get it. This is ONE of the loopholes I've been talking about!! We gotta tighten our borders for the sake of immigrants - who come here thru the front door. cont'd

  • Immigrants are people and deserve to seek freedom in this country - everyone does. And if the government can create X amount of new government offices to handle the "public option" - then they can add to our existing Immigration Offices to step up the process of legal entry. One of the BIG reasons people come here illegally is because the process to come legally is so lengthy and a person may not have that giant amount of time to wait. Treat people like people - process their applications timely - if you find someone brought here against their will - send them back (hell if NY can see the common sense in it - so can America) and let them apply legally - but process them, again in a timely manner. Don't make people wait years for simple opportunity to work for fair wages. I'm against ILLEGAL immigration but I'm for Immigration. They're welcome here - thru the front door.

  • LOL Imogene13! That is exactly how I feel about most of those statements Obama made in his speech - "That is a lie!" It may not be completely false, but he isn't telling the complete truth either!! So many of those things in the bill are vague and open the door for what many conservatives are fearful of. While the bill doesn't explicitly say that is what will happen, the vagueness leaves the door wide open for it to be interpreted that way by someone.

  • people can still be LEGAL w/o being citizens... they can have a visa also... just clarifying for a poster above ...

Answer by Anonymous at 9:29 AM on Sep. 12, 2009

  • Anon 9:29 - They wouldn't be called illegal immigrants if there were here legally. I don't think anyone has a problem with people who are here legally yet are not citizens.

  • Duh! ILLEGAL means they are not here Legally!! Why do people think those opposed to illegal immigrants are opposed to ANY immigrants? (This is not directed at any comment here, just a rant of mine in general)
