  • well if they are the ones im thinking of they hook onto the car...some of the newer cars have a clip above the back seat....its an added safety feature...i never used them though cause none of the cars i had had that design.

  • They are probably the tethers for the LATCH system.  Ask your local Fire Dept to help you install your car seat correctly.

  • like the person said above i would take it to a firestation or polica station they will install it for free. the did mine because like you ares was a gift and my hubby was away and i wanted to make sure it was in right. so just call them and set up an appointment and have them look at it just to be on the safe side.

  • In most newer cars/trucks, there are "hooks" IN the seat of the vehicle, that the HOOKS of the LATCH system connect to as well as a hook over the back seat of a mini-van OR the back dash of a car, etc. The LATCH system (extra black belts) is put thru the carseat differently for forward-facing than rear-facing. Do not assume this part. If the carseat was a NEW gift that they took out of the box, ask them for the box & directions. If not new, how old is it? May not be safe. If it is new and they ditched the box, ask for the directions, or look up the model online. They are easy to install, but MUST be done correctly in order to be safe for the baby. Fire Depts, as PP's have suggested will show you the right way. Congratulations on your baby!

  • if it's an infant seat and the straps are on the base then they are part of the LATCH system. You can use either LATCH or seat belts to install your seat... based on what works the best in your car (and if your car has is equipped for LATCH)
If it's a convertible seat or forward facing seat they also have an anchor strap that comes out of the back of the seat on the top... and it's also part of LATCH and is to make the seat more secure (but in most seats you don't use this strap until they are forward facing... but it depends on the seat)
I would for sure ask the company for a booklet for your seat... it's very important to know all the little things about your seat because they are all a little different... you don't want to guess with your child's safety
