Decision-making in ovarian Cancer?

FDA clears test that guides surgical decision-making in ovarian cancer
Sept 14, 2009

The FDA announced on Friday the clearance of a test that helps to detect ovarian cancer in a pelvic mass already known to require surgery. The OVA1 test helps patients and health care professionals decide the type of surgery and who should perform the surgery, according to an FDA press release.

Any thoughts?

  • The FDA is only the first hurdle.
Next the medical community must get on board (or not), educated and skilled at using the test with accuracy, and deteremine the benefit, if any,of the information obtained.
Insurance Cos will then decided if the test will be a covered procedure , at what rate, and for whom.
Ovarian cancer is very fast moving; time is critical.
