how can I save the comforter from rust and mildew?

my child put the comforter in the laundry room sink, the water from the sink caused a rust stain and mildew since I didn't realize I had a leak. (It sat in the sink for a couple of days) the mildew went all the way through and smells really bad.

  • For that I think a trip to the dry cleaners is your best chance.

If the comforter is white, you could first bleach it then give it a good rinse. After the bleach, use some ammonia to kill the mildew. (bleach just makes the color go away, doesn't kill the mildew.) Then rinse, rinse, rinse.

BLEACH AND AMMONIA SHOULD BE USED SEPARATELY...COMBINED THEY GIVE OFF A LETHAL GAS.

Rust might come out with Shout or another laundry stain remover.
