They can be very effective for a lot of women. The problem comes with interpretation: the test line must be as dark as or darker than the control line, and sometimes it's hard to tell if it's dark enough to be positive. If you can afford it, the digital ones that say for sure whether you're in your fertile period are the best way to go. Charting is a good way to go, too; it's the only way to know definitely if you've ovulated or not, since your LH (what the OPKs detect) can go up and down during your cycle, and sometimes you might not get a definite positive but still have ovulated.
