  • I probably wouldn't brown the beef but I know that it is typically done. Then I'd put the beef and cut up potatoes, carrots, onions, maybe celery, a bit of garlic, a can or two of beef broth, and cook all day on low. About an hour before done time, I'd shake some water and cornstarch or flour together to make it smooth and stir into the stew. Salt and pepper to taste. Put a bay leaf in at the beginning if you like.

  • I always cook mine in the crockpot. Beef first on bottom (not cooked), followed by potatoes, carrots, onion, celery and the I put my beef broth and spices and let it cook on low all day. Towards the end I put a little flour in to thicken it up while I cook my noodles or rice that I put it on.
