Breastfeeding/period question

Hi ladies!!

I have a question about my period while breastfeeding. I have been breastfeeding my 6 month old pretty much exclusively. Only supplement when absoulutely needed. Well, last month I got my period for the first time. I wasn't too surprised since I started him on cereal and he hasn't been eating as much. I am surprised however that I didn't get my period this month. The chances that I am pregnant are very, very slim. Is it possible that my period is still wacky b/c I am breastfeeding still? Took a test and said negative, but took it a little early. Thanks for your help!!

  • I am a breast feeding mom who never used formula, I started my son on cereal at 6 months and baby food at 9 months. I had a period at 3 months, 7 months, 9 months, 11months and 13 months. After that I started getting it every month. You could possibly be PG but chances are you just have a wacky cycle due to BF.

  • My son is 6 months old as well, and started out breastfeeding, i never had a problem with my period until i found out i was pregnant again, and i'm about 10 weeks now, so yes anything is possible. I took a few tests quite early with a negative result as well, it wasn't until i was 2 weeks late for some reason that the test actually showed up. Good luck with this one hoped my little tid bit helped.

  • EBF is not a great form of birth control, so if you've been having unprotected sex, you can certainly get pregnant. BFing will throw off most women's periods.

  • my period came two months after i had my dd (who is also six months) and then it has disappeared ever since. so i do believe BF causes irregularity.

  • My sister has wacky periods while nursing too. Her DD is almost 9 mos, she's had her period since 3 mos PP, and only gets a period every few mos. she is not pg. Anything is possible but get a test just to be sure.

  • if you were exclusively bfing, meaning no solids or formula, then it's def a slim chance that you are bfing. your period will be out of whack while your bfing. i didn't have a period for the first 4 months, then for the next 4-5 months it was very irregular (coming a week to almost 3 wks late), then these past 5-6 months, it's been more regular.
there's always a possibility of being pregnant. but, i would wait a few weeks to see if it comes, then test again. if you have a neg test again, you can either keep waiting or go see the dr for a bloodtest.
