Cap and Trade law or the wax bill what do you think?
Okay i'm sure many of you know about the cap and trade bill that is supposed to go to congress later on in the month. if you don't you can check it out at www.ourenergyvoice.com. from what i understand of it (my husband is a coal miner) is that they are going to make businesses pay for extra polution credits, mostly to try to drive the coal industry into the ground to start with there nuclear power plans and wind power plants, Around my area wind power wouldn't work, and there would have to be 10 nuclear power plants for one coal powered power plant, this bills if passed will destroy the coal industry completely and make jobs more scarce killing off more jobs than what new ones they promise. Oh yeah and if it passes no matter what that means your electric bill will double! If the coal mines are able to pay for there polution points, they will charge you more! cont...

OP--this bill already passed Congress over the summer--(it happened at around 7PM on a Friday night--while most people were at happy hours or BBQ's!), and it was supposed to get to the Senate this fall, and if it were to pass the Senate THEN it would make it to Obama's desk. BUT, I posted the other day, that this bill is dead, as the Senate convenes for the remainder of this year around October 9th, and the Seante has stated they will NOT vote on it.
Being that 2010 is an election year for many in Congress and The Senate, and few politicians stick their necks out so close to their re-election campaigns (for fear that their constituents will actually remember they voted against them), this bill will likely stay dead, as Republicans WILL regain the majority of control in both the House and the Senate in 2010, and will continue to squash any attempts by Democrats to pass modified versions of this bill.Votes up:0 Votes down:0

Oh yeah and if it passes either way with the coal companies paying more, or us paying to build nuclear power plants, were going to pay for it one way or another! So what do you gals think about this bill, please read up on it a little more if your not sure about it. Thanks just a worried coal miners wife doing some over thinking!

OH YEAH I FORGOT TO MENTION THE $2900.00 MORE A YEAR YOU'D BE PAYING FOR GAS AND HEATING OILS ALONG WITH ELECTRIC, 2 MILLION MORE JOBS LOST, 58 PERCENT INCREASE IN GASOLINE AND THE INCREASE ON ALL AMERICIAN PRODUCTS.

Where are you? I'm in Wyoming, and we already have a couple of coal plants that have voluntarily taken the steps to try and offset their pollution emissions. Additionally, Europe has already started to implement a cap and trade system without any of the supposed consequences you're claiming would happen. This isn't something new, nor is it something "untested". Cap and trade hasn't destroyed the coal industry in Europe. Why do you think a similar law would have different consequences here? The only reason I could possibly come up with is because those who own the coal mines would rather just fold their companies than attempt to change the way they're running.

You DO realize that there is LESS than 150 years worth of mineable coal left in the US ground right? We have to do something to stop polluting the air and earth with coal now. Waiting another few generations before going green will only hurt all of our power supplies.

I'm all for going green, BUT in will take decades before green power will be able to power the US. Not to mention many environmentalists are against water power and wind power because they harm animals, and that will certainly slow things down. In the meantime, we need gas, oil, and coal to provide electricity and heat. It makes no sense to cripple the industry we have in place in them meantime.

"Going Green" has been environmentalist discussion fodder since the 70's....and other than curbing emissions, and enacting oodles of restrictions, what strides have actually been made to say limit or eliminate our dependence on fossil fuels? Do we have new nucleear power plants? Do we have wind or solar technology that has been refined to actually be of implementable size and cost? Every 10 years or so, we are told it will take at least 10 years to implement new "green" technology, and the decades continue to "slip by!

Wyoming also has lots of wide open spaces on some plains that can accommodate wind energy, which sadly doesn't really amount to much of your energy supply (really, you should do a little research).
Unfortunately, our elected officials don't really want nuclear energy, although it would be the best thing for us. See, it's not good enough for us, but our government doesn't have a problem with supplying other countries with plutonium to have nuclear energy, you know, as long as they promise not to develop it into weaponry. I am sure we can trust them, don't you think?
