Do you spank or put in Time-out?

just curious on what other moms are doing? I personally try to do time outs but my daughter is only 3 but occasionally i have spanked her if she is doing something that will hurt her, but afterwards i always feel bad.

  • We call time out "think about its" I put them there one min per yr of age they are. When time is up, I ask them why they were put there, then I ask them to tell me what a better choice of behavior would have been. It works great for us.

  • spanking, i tried using a stern voice at first, then smacking his hands, then time outs and spanking is the most effective. he actually liked timeouts, go figure! but everyone i know spanks their kids, don't let society make you feel bad about it, do what your mother instinct tells you to do. some kids can learn from timeouts and some kids can't, rather than raising a total brat, i'll stick to spanking

  • We have tried time outs, spanking, taking away privileges, etc. Nothing worked for our son until a few days ago when he got in trouble at school my husband made our son do a few push-ups, sit-ups, and then had him hold his arms out for a minute or two (basically what they call smoking a private in basic training). It works for our son. He was begging for a spanking and he straightens up as soon as we mention making him do these things.

  • im the same- spankings are saved for very dangerous or naughty behaviour but time outs are the norm here

  • I have done both. Timeouts don't work for my 2 and 3 year old. I've spanked several times but none here recently. Of course, they don't like to be spanked and have quickly learned what is and isn't appropriate. If it's something new that we haven't had to deal with before, they get told NO first. I have chosen to not spank on what I call the "first offense". For example, if they were to climb on my entertainment center, the first time, I would take them down and firmly say NO. The second time I'm spanking. Since you are feeling guilty though if I were you I would find another method. I say spanking is fine and I don't feel guilty when I feel like they deserve a spanking but if I did, I wouldn't spank them period. In my opinion, you have to be comfortable with their punishment or you won't be consistent anyways and there won't be any point.

  • Both, it just depends on which one they need.
