knitting help please

I am starting my first sweater. I am checking my gauge, my pattern says 19 stitches = 4" in stockinette stitch. I knitted several inches and I have 23" = 4". This is the start of the back. I am using a size 5 needle. Question: Do I use a size 6 needle to obtain the right gauge? Thank You, Calamitykid = Marla

  • Yes, try a size 6 to see if you'd get the right gauge. A smaller size would give you more stitches per inch.

  • I agree, try using a larger needle.
