bear false witness against others...

what exactly does this mean? when you are lying verses just saying what you think is the truth?

  • Bearing false witness implies known lying about a person. . In Exodus 23 the term used is spreading a false report and the term malicious is used. So I think it is pretty clear that a false witness is intentional.

  • So it's sort of like spreading lies and hate about someone else's beliefs because you have issues with those particular beliefs. Chances are a person may know in their heart that what they are saying is a lie, but they preach it anyway because of their dislike for said beliefs.

    1) Lying about another and gossiping
    2) Speaking with authority on things which you do not know or have no authority to speak about

  • I agree with TQ. This verse refers to knowingly speaking a mistruth about someone else.

  • i think this is a great answer especially as it relates to telling others about their beliefs based on your limited or lack of knowledge..

  • Its in exodus 20 15"You shall not steal.
    16"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

    that means to not lie about others.
