Why are so many smart, successful women lighting up in their off-hours?

"According to a recent study by The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, an estimated 8 million American women smoked up in the past year—a lowball figure that reflects only those willing to cop to it. Among them is the upper-middle-class Pottery Barn set: One in five women who admitted to indulging in the previous month lives in a household earning more than $75,000 a year. They cut a wide swath across the professional spectrum, including lawyers, editors, insurance agents, TV producers, and financial biggies, looking nothing like the blotto hippie teens of Dazed and Confused or the unemployed, out-of-shape schlubsters who are a staple of the Judd Apatow canon. By all outward appearances, they are card-carrying, type A workaholics who just happen to prefer kicking back with a blunt instead of a bottle."

  • PLEASE take a moment to read the 2 page article before commenting.

I think this article makes several valid points.  I've seen women around CM state they'd never respect anyone who smoked (whether they had children or not); but look it could be your Dr; lawyer; accountant; etc...

Does the fact so many educated; successful people indulge change your opinions or judgemental assumptions any?

  • We should just legalize it already! Tax it and PAY for healthcare for every legal American. Cut the drug cartels OUT of the process and we would have the $ we need to fix our American problems.

  • I think it is a wonderful plant and you would be shocked at the real #s. More and more people are realizing what they were taught about pot in DARE as a child couldn't be further from the truth.

  • and statistically pot is WAY safer than alcohol. There are no deaths from it and is not really addictive. Its natural. I think everyone should watch "Super High-Me." A true pothead comic goes 30 days sober and then 30 straight days of smoking a lot. He does tests and other things to compare the effects and a few things he actually did better. Like IQ tests. It was an awesome movie and was a good way to truly reveal the facts of getting high.

Although, like with any substance that can alter the way you feel, it is not for everbody. There are a few people who shoud NOT smoke, just like there are people who cannot handle getting drunk.

  • The upper-middle class Pottery Barn set is also known to cheat on spouses, embezzle, cheat for their kids to give them an edge, develop addictions to prescription pain killers, employ illegal labor, evade taxes and do whatever it takes to maintain the status quo. They are the heart and soul of the cocaine and oxycotin markets. Why are so many smart, successful women such narcissistic train wrecks? Pot is hardly something that makes them, or anyone else, more noble.

  • I was a substitute teacher for a while in a school up in MA. I was SHOCKED to find our how many SCHOOL TEACHERS indulge when they go home. I do not care though. Both my parents smoked pot, were Harvard graduates & were GREAT parents. I caught them red handed when i was 20 years old. It was the funniest thing walking in on a bunch of old folks smoking a joint. They were SO embarassed!
