I'm breastfeeding my son who is now 6 weeks old. I'm curious how often and long on average babies feed once they get 3-4 months old?

  • all the time!! lol! my daughter is 5 mos old and she eats about every two hours STILL! As they get older, their sucking reflex is stronger so they get more milk at once so their feeding duration shortens, but not frequency (in my experience!)

  • Mine was feeding every 3 hours until 4 months old when we introduced cereal. Even then he ate every 3-4. Around 15 mins/side.

  • they have their days. my ds is 7 mts some days he eats evry 2 hrs others every 4. . it really depends on how much your baby likes to eat. i have a chunky monkey so he eatslike crazy

  • Mine ate every 3 hours (give or take) until I started solids. Even then, she still liked to nurse pretty frequently. As they get older, the nursing sessions themselves get shorter because both your boobs and baby have figured out how to get it into baby faster but the frequency pretty well stays the same. (Mine also slept through the night early - 6 hours at 6 weeks, 8 hours at 8 weeks and 11-12 by 3 mo. so if baby is eating in the middle of the night as well, you may find baby gets longer stretches during the day).

  • It's hard to say. Every baby is different. Some are still nursing every 1-2 hrs at that age, others will go 4-5 hrs. It's such a guessing game! IMO it's best to nurse on demand.

  • i don't know about you but when my son was newborn he would nurse for 45 minutes, 10-12 times per day! this slowed down gradually , and by 6 weeks it was probably a bit less than that. by 3 months it was probably just 20 minutes each time but i can't remember how many times per day. by 6 months though, he would nurse for about 10 minutes.

i can't remember all of that stuff very much but i just wanted to reassure you if you are asking this because your baby takes a long time to nurse :) it gets sooo much easier and becomes even more wonderful
