Study shows that spanked children have lower IQ's

I saw this on the today show this morning, & decided to do a lil research. The evidence is amazing. Children in countries who have outlawed spanking, have higher IQ's. And Children in other countries who were not spanked have an average IQ that is 5 points higher than children who were spanked. Another reason why "reasoning" with your child goes a lot further that spanking them. I believe this to be true.

What's your take on it?

  • Of course you's think it's a crock. Keep spanking your kid, & don't look at the evidence that proves it to be true. My kid will have a higher IQ :)

  • IQ's are an individual thing, if anything kids who are spanked would be more emotionally disturbed, (the one's that get them excessivley). My opinion.

  • They link the findings to stress. children who are spanked have more fear, & tend to have more stress in their lives. Stress makes everything in one's life harder. Also, the findings are more true among children who are spanked more often. I'm sure a small pat on the behind every once in a blue moon will not do any damage.

  • and by the way just because one spanks does not mean they do not 'reason' with and speak to their children as well ;)

  • I don't spank, but I don't think it damages a child's IQ either. I think IQ is a genetic inborn thing. I think there are things a parent can do to determine what their children do with their IQ and whether or not they reach their potential, but not to change it.
There are deadbeats with a high IQ.
