How do I take care of a Betta Fish?

I have never been a fish owner and have been told that these fish are really easy to care for.

  • I knew someone would say this. NO you cannot put them in a vase with a plant. It is not enough room for them,. the plant keeps them from getting to the surface. THEY HAVE TO BREATH AIR. They do not eat the plants roots. This is a very poor choice of living for a Betta. They need a tank with a lid because they DO jump. http://www.bettatalk.com/betta_in_a_vase.htm http://freshaquarium.about.com/od/bettas/a/bettavase.htm http://www.aquariumguys.com/betta-fish-care-article.html

  • They are! They're kind of funny too. If you put a small mirror in it's tank they will puff up their faces and spread out their fins. It's actually a territorial thing, but it's funny :)
You just feed them and make sure they have enough water in their tank. Very easy to care for.

  • Bettas can live w/o a filter --- so you can either set up a regular tank w/ filter or put him in a goldfish tank or even a vase with ivy. Just have to clean it out about once a week.

Small pinch of food once/twice a day.

Do NOT put 2 males together --- they will fight to the death. BUT, it is healthy for them to "challenge" --- so setting up a mirror or getting 2 males in seperate tanks where they can see each other for about an hour a day is a good idea.

They can live peacefully with most other community fish... do NOT mix with snails --- they'll eat their eyeballs.

That's about it --- pretty simple.

  • I forgot --- if you want to add more community fish, you'll have to set up a tank & filter --- bettas & goldfish are the only fish that can live w/o a filter, BUT bettas & goldfish can't coexist in the same environment.

  • We have 2 of them, they are in different tanks. Once a day we feed them 1 betta fish tablet a piece. I do use tap water, but the water has sat for at least 2 day to let the chlorine evaporate. They are the easiest pet to have.
