Did anyone save their baby's bellybutton?

I saved the bellybutton's of all three of my kids when they fell off, and I keep them in sealed envelopes in each baby book. I am usually given odd looks when I tell people this, but in my family it was just something that was always done- I don't know why. Does anyone know if there is there some kind of superstion surrounding this or perhaps some folklore?

  • I said 'bellybutton' because if I would have asked 'did you save your babies umbilical cord' people might have thought I meant the WHOLE damn thing up to and including the placenta. By the way, I recently found a web site that will make TEDDY BEARS out of your child's placenta!

  • I did for a foster baby I had, and sent it to her family when she left. THEY may have thought it was weird, but I thought it was wonderful!

  • Yes, My Dad insisted on having my kids and my sisters kids belly button's when they fell off. Were American Indian, He keeps them in a special leather pouch for reasons only known to him.

  • Yes, I have them in little ziplock baggies in the baby memory box for all three kids. I'm sure they will be super grossed out when they find out I have them, but I just couldn't throw them out!
I'm also saving their baby teeth as they fall out, though I had them at the back of a drawer so that the kids don't wonder why the tooth fairy didn't fly off with them!
