Make sure you have all the supplies you need with you before you start. Boxes of varying sizes, newpaper or other packing material, tape for sealing boxes, a big marker for clearly marking the boxes on multiple sides. Pack fragile things first, when you're less rushed. Remember not to overload boxes. A fairly small box works better for heavy items, medium boxes for clothes, toys, etc, large boxes for quilts, pillows, and other light items.
If you get pressed for time and have to work really quickly, just do boxes based on how they are now in your home-- "my dresser", "kitchen junk drawer," etc. You will at least have a good idea what kind of stuff is in each box. Save an empty box or two for moving day; you'll find something at the last minute that needs packing up.
