How many degrees do you add to an underarm temperature reading?

My son hasn't been feeling well today and his underarm temperature is 98.9. How much do I add to this? And is there anyway I can get it down without waking him up?

  • I always thought you added one, but when my son was in the nicu they took his temperature under the arm all the time and never added a degree.

  • i always heard add one degree, and my dd pediatrician and her dr and the urgent care said add one too.

rectally, you dont do anything people say subtract one, but you do not subtract a degree.

  • +1 under arm, as it reads in the mouth, -1 in the butt.
