Is it normal for a 2 year old to not eat often

  • We asked the pediatrician the same thing when our son was 2. He ate like a little bird. The pediatrician basically said that a toddler will eat when he/she is hungry; she/he will not starve. As long as your child's weight is acceptable and is not dropping, I would say you're in the same boat we were. Just continue to offer the meals and snacks as you always would.

  • I call this the air-o-tarian phase! They all go through it. First, make sure that she is drinking water, so she doesn't get dehydrated.
    Most important, do not create a monster who only eats nuggets, mac and cheese and hot dogs.
    Just keep offering a variety of healthy foods, and eventually she will start eating.
    Frozen foods are fun to play with, and will get eaten, like peas, blueberries and corn. Chunks of avocado and tofu are loaded with great nutrition, and are fun to squish between little fingers.
    I have never met a toddler who wouldn't eat hummus (lots of calcium, protein, good fats and iron), you can mix it with a mashed egg.
    Offer cut fruits with yogurt dip, fresh veggies with hummus or salad dressing, cooked whole wheat pasta and veggies with marinara or peanut sauce or cheese sauce.

  • We use the 3 bite rule. You must try 3 bites of what is on your plate; if you don't like it, you get peanut butter and honey on whole grain toast with a kiwi or apple. Even my husband is expected to follow the rule.
    If you cave now, you will forever have a picky monster on your hands. I promise that your child will not starve. Moms who cave are part of the reason why by the end of next year one half of American children will be both undernourished and overweight. One third of children born in this century will develop type 2 diabetes.
    Keep offering a variety of healthy foods; stop buying junk foods until the picky phase has passed,

  • THE BIGGEST TIP EVER: dont stress. Because as much as you do, it only gets to you. Make sure your child is getting the milk he needs. And try giving him milk after meals. But you shouldn't let him control you. Ask him what he wants, Don't give him what he doesn't want. But don't offer junkfood, but give him a variety of foods that are healthy and let him choose, learn his faveorites and prepare them, And let him stop eating when he wants. LET HIM TELL YOU WHEN HE'S HUNGRY.

  • Toddlers only need about 1/4 of the calories we do; that adds up to about 500-600 calories A DAY. That's not a lot to us, who are used to eating that much in a single meal, but it's plenty for a toddler. It's normal for kids to go through phases, one week eating everything in sight and the next eating practically nothing, but it all evens out over time. On top of that, we're not born with the urge to eat when we're bored -- it's an acquired habit; toddlers will eat when they're hungry, and only when they're hungry, as long as they're not being forced. Just keep offering food, and eventually he'll eat it. If his growth starts to decline and the pedi is concerned, then it's time to worry, but not before.
