What is a satin stitch?

I have looked all over google, and I can't figure out what a satin stitch is! Please help me! Is it just decorative? Or is it ANY stitch that more than just straight lines?

  • On most sewing machines if you want to do a satin stitch, like for applique, you need to use your zig zag stitch and set the length to the shortest possible to get the stitches as close together. Some of the computerized machines now have a true satin stitch, which is just straight back and forth to get that "ribbon like" look that rosebud727 was talking about.
