My son was diagnosed with bronchities today? I think it's the flu. Will antibiotics help flu symptoms?

He has a dry cough, sore throat, a fever of 103, dizzy, has been sleeping for a couple of days, doesn't want to eat, body aches etc. He has had bronchitis before and was never this sick. The Dr. put him on an antibiotic, if he does have the flu will the antibiotic help it? Thank you.

  • No an antibiotic will not help the flu matter of fact it can make it worse... that said if your DS is not taking in adequate fluids and is lethargic and you really think he's got the flu consider asking for IV hydration--very often when they dehydrate is when problems happen -- get him just 2 or 3 boluses he'll be back to his old self again...

  • No the antibiotic will kill the bacteria (the bronchitis) but not kill the flu virus. He will probably start to feel better after the bronchitis clears up but the antibiotics wont bring down the fever or help body aches. Check with the Dr if he can take tylenol or advil for the fever, etc. Best thing, let him sleep, push fluids when he is awake. Hope he feels better soon.

  • If they say your son has bronchitis he needs to be on antibiotics. They don't treat the flu, the flu is irrelavent to bronchitis. Bronchitis is serious and needs to be treated immediatly. Flu will work out on it's own. Bronchitis requires treatment. If the doctor is telling you, you need to listen. Have you ever had it? You get a fever, aches, stuffy, dry cough, that's all the symptoms of bronchitis. His body is fighting infection. The doc had to have identified it in his lungs to diagnose it, so the doc is probably right.

  • Antibiotic will NOT help the flu, the flu is a virus that just has to run it's course. Why do you not believe the doctor? If you are worried that the doctor is wrong, DEMAND THEY TEST YOUR CHILD FOR THE FLU. Make sure he is hydrated and rests/sleeps as much as he wants. Give Ibuprofen for the body aches and fevers.
