How Can I become a Direct Entry Midwife?

I want to be a DEM so bad. I'm a nurse and work on L&D and hate all the interventions that lead to more interventions and eventually a c-section. I'd love to do HBs but how would I go about becoming a DEM? Would I just call up a midwife and ask if I could become her apprentice?

  • It depends on what state you live in. In IN being a DEM is illegal. In AZ there are licensed midwives and the state has a form you fill out to become licensed. I am trying to become a midwife's assistant in Tucson.

I would suggest doing a google search to find out what the laws are in your state. You may want to become a CPM. You can find out the requirements on their website.
