  • Probably a chapel veil or mantilla. It was more popular back then for women to wear a veil or head covering when attending Catholic Mass. And if attending a Tridentine Mass (Old Latin Mass) women are suppose to wear one even today. It's actually a pretty anceint tradition for women to cover their heads as a sign of modesty and reverence. The practice had been dwindling prior to Vatican II, but was pretty much given up with the Novus Ordo (New Order) Mass that came after Vatican II. However, some women have taken the practice up again and do wear veils.

They're basically a lace scarf (and a scarf works just as well).  They're still pretty popular in Spanish speaking countries/neighborhoods.  Sometimes Catholic supply stores will have them.  You can order them online- places like the Catholic Company or St. Francis Veil Company and I'm sure other places as well.

  • It is a mantilla and many Catholic women still wear them to church. Usually it is the elderly Catholic ladies that do so. Jackie Kennedy wore one because at the time, it was respectful to do so.
