So when you cough up mucus it is coming from your lungs, right? So how/why would it make things worse if you swallow it rather than spit it out? Its not like you're sending it back to your lungs.

  • It is clogging your airways. You need to get it out; there is a chance that you can wind up with pneumonia (sp?)

  • Most likely any excess mucous produced is infected and you really don't want to be swallowing infected material on purpose. At least that is what I have alway been told.
