So when you cough up mucus it is coming from your lungs, right? So how/why would it make things worse if you swallow it rather than spit it out? Its not like you're sending it back to your lungs.Answer Question

Most likely any excess mucous produced is infected and you really don't want to be swallowing infected material on purpose. At least that is what I have alway been told.
