What wines go best with what foods?

I have never been a drinker but after baby #4 I'm wanting to. What wines go best with beef, chicken & fish? I also noticed wine drinkers eating olives, grapes and crackers. Why is that? Also dipped strawberries with wine. What's you're experience?

  • I suggest that you start going to wine tastings. You can find local ones here: www.localwineevents.com

You should also consider taking a class; if you are in the chicago-metro area, I can recommend a couple

  • In general, reds go with red meats and whites go with white meats. Most wine companies have food pairings written on their labels.

Pinot noir: earthy foods like mushrooms, steaks, rosemary, blue cheese, baked brie, apricots

pinot gris: seafood pasta, orzo, lemon sauces, thyme, citrus

cabernet: heavy meats like sausages, swiss cheese, potatoes and root veggies, apples

chardonnay: chicken, breaded fish, baked white fish, sage, mint, lamb, berries

chianti: pasta with red sauce, stuffed pastas, chocolate

port: dessert wine, after dinner with gouda and berries

That's a start! Don't let anyone expert you to death. You know what you like and dont like.

  • This website offers ideas of which wines go best with every type of food... whether it be an appetizer, soup, pasta, meats, cheeses etc. Check it out if you get time, it helps my wife and I pair some wines for a lot of our meals!
